This remodel and addition project located in Sonoma is designed around two passionate home cooks. For them the kitchen is the center of their home (both literally and figuratively); an energizing palette of materials, colors and lighting have been used to emphasize that priority. Using designated work zones within the small footprint of the kitchen, this design supports the needs of a chef while also maintaining social connection with guests in a number of different ways.

On entry your attention is immediately seized by this gorgeous piece of Sistina Cappella marble behind the range, illuminated from the sides and framed in contrast color cabinetry. The organic dynamism of the veining pops against the otherwise rectilinear language of the kitchen.

 

The lounge area adjacent to the kitchen provides another seating option for guests; situated on the darker, north-side of the house the low furniture and dropped pendant light make this space feel relaxed and comfortable.

The leather lounge chairs lead the color selections for the kitchen as a whole; the blue cabinetry which matches the saturation of the earthy, yellow tones in the chairs and the natural warmth of Sistina Cappella marble.

As wine professionals it was essential to provide our clients with a space dedicated to the pouring and showcasing of beverages; served by two wine fridges the lounge bar centers an integrated glass rack flanked by two illuminated hutches for spirits.

 

The hutches open vertically and meet the counter-top directly such that the prep surface is unimpeded and can easily be cleaned. Et Marfil Silestone is used for its high stain resistance and complimentary hue.

The double-galley format of the kitchen facilitates the use of the kitchen by two people at the same time, both with their own front and back counter spaces and independent sinks. Not only does this support the head-chef / sous-chef dynamic, but also guests that inevitably end up socializing in kitchen. The kitchen terminates at the new dining room addition that looks out over the client’s expansive and productive back yard from which they harvest fresh vegetables and raise chickens.

 

The peninsula between the kitchen and the dining space acts as a serving station for the dining room and houses the under-counter microwave.

Et Marfil Silestone counters are used for their hard wearing and stain resistant qualities, great for the cooking of curries and pickling of produce.

Warm counters and backsplash tile visually marry both the flooring and marble to the relaxed color of the cabinetry. Polished nickel pulls, knobs and faucetry also lend to that warmth compared to chrome which can feel cooler in hue.

SDL are creative and up to date with the latest trends. Sam has a particularly strong eye for design. He did a thorough job guiding us from conceptualization to assisting us with material selection. He was attentive to our requirements, and designed a functional and beautiful kitchen.
